The Paradiso, Amsterdam, Netherlands (2009)

ASBURYJUKES.NET – 30. October, 2009 – So, you don’t expect us to post setlists, do you? Since I’ve never been any good in keeping my mind together enough to write down what’s happening on stage, I decided to use the camera instead. Pushing a camera button, everytime Joe Belia hits the Hi-Hat, that’s almost all I can ask my brain to coordinate when the JUKES are on.

Since Mike Saunders and Dave Perceival have been covering our backs, Gundula and I had a hell of a time up on the balcony at the Paradiso in Amsterdam. And a camera which has been working… other than in Melle, Germany, the night before. So here’s what we brought with us – for those who have not been fortunate enough to see the highlight of this year’s Euro tour… already at the second show.

Best Of YouTube: The Paradiso, Amsterdam, Netherlands (2009)

ASBURYJUKES.NET – Videos fresh from the JukesTube – Tracks: Nothing But A Heartache, Love On The Wrong Side Of Town, Tell ‘em I’m Broke, Until The Good Is Gone, This Time Baby’s Gone For Good, Shake That Baby Tonight, There’s Got To Be A Better Way, Land Of The 1000 Dances…

Yeah, the balcony at the Paradiso was too attractive not to try to play around with Gundula’s camera. It’s not HIFI, it’s not even a decent quality. It’s not even been a video camera. But it’s been a whole lot of fun to shoot the Jukes… Next year I’ll bring a real one – video-camera that is – I guess.

Now, go and check YouTube. There’s a whole lot of stuff from then Paradiso available! Seem’s like every second person had a camera on…

Here we go (Amsterdam, The Paradiso)

After (finally) a quiet night in at Marjan’s (thank you Marjan!) we arose feeling resasonably rested for a change and headed into Amsterdam, collecting Maurice, Doug, Karin, Carina and Guido on the way, and set off to see some sights. We visited a photography exhibition with great pics of C Berry, F Domino, J Brown, J Cocker, Stones, Who etc, and peeked into several others in the arty Speigelgraacht area, wended our way over several canals, saw the Beginhof (an old convent, a bit of peace in the centre of the city), rooted through a huge record store, ate pancakes and still were on the steps of the Paradiso by 6 pm.

December 5 in The Netherlands is Sinterklaasavond, the festival of St Nicholas, when schools have no lessons and a half-day holiday and people exchange gifts of special chocs and cakes. In particular, it’s traditional to get a lovely bar of rich chocolate in the shape of the initial letter of your name. So Evelien (Marjan’s daughter, the young fan whom Southside brought on stage to dance with him in Amsterdam last year) made up a Santa sack with nicely wrapped chocolate letters for each of the Jukes and crew and delivered it to the stage door of the Paradiso.

WEDS 10 NOVEMBER: 013 CLUB, TILBURG

Tilburg, when we reach it, appears basically to be closed, and it’s raining again, but we find a kiosk selling frites, which cheers me up, since I didn’t get any in Belgium…

The 013 Club seems to be a purpose-built rock venue (or “popcenter”, as the town signposts have it). From the outside, it’s this big, industrial-looking steel-mesh and glass box, with the top storeys clad in some padded neoprene-type stuff, studded with rows of CDs! Inside, the stark, black room has a standing space in front of the – again very high – stage, and then the back part is all steeply raked steps, dotted with little standing-height tables, and it’s all framed with thick theatre curtains. Smart design, but it doesn’t have the party atmosphere of the Paradiso. Still, we had a great show, of a different kind – just one great song after another, the extemporanea mostly in the form of covers, but we got requests played and some clowning, too…

It started with Southside and Bobby, and then Ed, trying to bundle Hood off the stage while he was checking the set-up. Then South hauled him back on as he was trying to leave and introduced him as: “the hardest- working man in showbusiness – and the most abused”.

TUES 9 NOVEMBER: PARADISO, AMSTERDAM

It’s a bright, cold day, which Marjan and I spend walking the canals in Amsterdam and gazing at the tall, tottering but so elegant buildings… Finally we all gather on the steps of the Paradiso for photos and a long, cold wait, to the amusement of stray band and crew members walking past. But it’s the penultimate show for us, and it’s Marjan and Evelien’s home gig, so it’s important we get a spot where we can see.

The Paradiso – as I may be the last to know – has been a famous rock venue since the mid-sixties, but before that was a church. A lovely building in the cultural quarter of the city, with an amazingly high stage, which still has the orginal stained glass windows glowing with a dim, eerie light behind it. and two rows of prettily carved wooden balconies all around the other three sides. Southside said he didn’t know why he had a new white shirt on – maybe because he was in church… and he sure put on a righteous show… Great mood, lots of requests played, lots of impro…
