Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes – Better Days

The show of the year? Well, it’s hard to judge that, when you have only seen two… but one thing is for sure: The lucky people at the Paradiso got what they paid for & a whole lot of somethin’ on top. It’s something very special with the Jukes & Amsterdam. One thing is the atmosphere of the place… it still feels like a worshiping venue… which it still is – at least when Reverend Lyon calls his followers to join for 2,5 hours service. To me, it’s the Dutch audience (expanded with people from ALL over Europe & overseas) which makes the Paradiso show a standout. People who know their stuff well. People who know how to have a damn good time in a very laid-back fashion. That’s it!

A tip to the hat goes to Patrick Sweany, for being the best Jukes support act at the Paradiso in the last 10 years!

Now, we're engaged - or something like that... (Bospop, Weert, NL)

Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes, Bospop Festival, Weert, The Netherlands, June 10. 2010

Well…, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes have changed my live in so many ways… I thought, this show would be the appropriate intimate (with just approximately 30.000 close friends in the audience) event to propose to my lady. And I did… somehow! While the titanium-rings were burning holes in my pockets, the lady was too busy taking these pictures, just so you can enjoy them here. While I was standing to the left of The Prinz, Eddie Manion was blowing his heart out…

If I give you my heart, will you love me forever…?

WHAT A DAY! THANK YOU ALL!!!

(Hi to Maggie, Marc, Liz & Cavi!)

The Paard Van Troje, Den Haag, Netherlands (2009)

ASBURYJUKES.NET – 31.OCTOBER 2009 – The trip from Amsterdam’s IBIS Hotel to Den Haag’s IBIS Hotel was as smooth as it could be. Empty Dutch motorways are a real treat for somebody who’s used to the Autobahn… and the rush hour as such. Den Haag, is a place where Johnny has been the last time more than 10 years ago, playing the Koniginnen Naach Festival in 1999 on his semi-acoustic comeback tour. Den Haag has almost the same amount of spectacular museums, the same nice cafes and eateries, as many bicicles, and the same boring IBIS room layouts and furniture as Amsterdam. Just the road-map is much, much easier, since they don’t have that many canals and one-way-streets…

Now, since the IBIS rooms were no highlight at all, it was a real highlight that the Paard was in 2 minutes walking distance, and it’s been a place where I and (to my knowledge) Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes have not been before. So this was Southside Johnny & the conquerors from New Jersey again. A new night, a new place, a new audience… and EDDIE MANION on a Halloween Saturday!

Happy Halloween at the Paard van Troje, Den Haag, NL (2009)

REALROOTSCAFE.COM – On the night of the Hague show, all the Hague’s people who were dressed in Halloween attire went to see Southside Johnny to play at the Horse for the first time. The rock singer from New Jersey, on the road since 1975 with his band The Asbury Jukes, can not yet be written off. This has just been proven once more during the more than 2 hour vibrant show that Johnny and his band performed for an enthusiastic audience.

He had – as he said – a frog in the throat, but hoarse voice or not but: The show must go on! A compelling show with an appealing mix of urban rock, soul and blues.

The audience got to hear no fewer than 25 songs. The first highlight was “Don’t Call Me Baby”, a wonderful soul grinder on a high level. The horn section with four winds has been full up for it. Baritone Sax player Ed Manion had just appeared on The Rock Hall Of Fame Show in New York with a leading role for Bruce Springsteen, Sting and Billy Joel the night before and just flewn in right for Den Haag’s show .
