Barbs and Bonds @ BB Kings

Well, it was another energetic evening at BB Kings on Saturday. Never a dull moment when Gary US Bonds joins Southside on stage. An absolute riot – the two of them trading irreverent insults like an old married couple – all the while belting out some great tunes. As always, there were fabulous covers and standout performances … Chris’s truly kick-a** solo on Fever, Eddie’s sax on Renee, a beautiful accordion solo by Kazee to close out Princess of Little Italy…
Jukes at B.B.King’s in NYC (2009)
This for sure has been the hottest night in NYC yet this year. Videographer “WORST984″ might have been the busiest man in the audience at B.B.King’s Blues on 42nd Street in New York City. Here’s just an extract of my personal fav’s of his excellent and extensive coverage of Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes on YOUTUBE.COM
I’M LOOKIN’ FOR A LOVE (featuring Jeff Kazee)
The Human Dominican Pogo Stick At B.B.King's
Greetings from the human Dominican pogo stick that usually hangs out in front of Kazee…:-wink. Though most of my friends are rock & rollers, I’m really the only one in my circle of friends that loves SSJ & the AJ’s and whenever I tell them that I’m going to see them they bascially say “Again?”. Well, after this weekend I’ve fallen back in love with them, “AGAIN”,…LOL! Just like every other time that I go to see them…:-wink
Some other folks have already mentioned how into it the crowd was on Saturday and I second that emotion (pun intended…:-wink, :-smile). Same held true for last night, “small but mighty” as SSJ said himself. When I walked in@showtime last night I had mixed emotions. The dancer in me said “yeah, dancing room…” but the fan in me said “I wish there were more here to enjoy what will be another great show” and it was, well before Little Steven (finally!) graced the assembled masses and shared the stage with the band.
Jukes at B.B.King's in NYC, NY
The shows of Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes at BB KING’S Nightclub in Manhattan, NYC are always somewhat special since some years already. Two shows, back to back at the same venue, with almost the same audience both nights usually means that Southside and the Jukes put some extra attention in making each night special for themselves and everybody.
This year an old friend from the neighborhood came by and joined the band the second night… the original mastermind and godfather himself…
Here’s the report from BENZ on the Blog THE WONDERBAR…
Stevie played the following songs with the band: Hearts of Stone / Forever / Soothe Me / Shake ‘Em Down. It must have been special to see him play “Hearts of Stone” with the Jukes considering his history with Johnny, and also his history with the guy who wrote the song (though his name escapes me at the moment :) )
It’s a second hand account of a report, but it’s a nice blog, so I recommend reding the whole piece at: THE WONDERBAR

If you got horns... Use them!
ASBURYJUKES.NET – BY STAN LISOWSKI – JULY 27, 2001
it’s been a couple of days since friday evening at bb kings. and the “buzz” from that night still lingers fairly strong. in what ranks up there with jukestock and the NYE millennium performances, to us, this was a HUGELY memorable show. quite simply, it had everything one could ask for. the energy, music, and comedy that came from this gig, were something special. from the get go with johnny in a wackier than wack mood, this night was filled with smiles and laughs. right off the bat southside is bemoaning his mic stand. “never being able to catch a break” he mutters. then he goes into busting the horn duo that play on network tv.
only coming to “slum” with the jukes. max weinberg was next to catch the redass from johnny, as south proclaimed him “the luckiest man in the business”. by the time “tell ‘em i’m broke” was thru, southside was in full stride. “if you got horns, IF you GOT horns, IF YOU GOT HORNS……USE EM”, was a chant that perfectly fit the festivities.
musical highs, in no particular order, “sinful”, nasty, bluesy, soulsonic. johnny’s vocals going guttural. chris, wearing one of the coolest shirts i have ever wanted, closing his eyes, shaking his head side to side, mouthing “you’re sinful baby”, while shaking his hand, fanning the heat. “i played the fool”, muddy providing the big bass intro.
kingfish just nailing the big baritone solo. “25 miles”, a sweet treat, with edwin starr’s classic, never sounding so horny with all that brass. south, jeff, bobby sharing vocals. the “countdown” on “miles to go” was the balls.
soulful instances occurred during “gladly go blind” and “tired skin”. witnessed some swooning from the ny girlie contingent during the former.
chris anderson providing a most passionate accompaniment to johnny’s vocals on the latter. thanks for making my wife all mushy, chris.
bandiera, wailed on “livin’ with the blues”.
“on the beach”, louie louie, slammin’, hammerin’. drumstick pieces flying like shrapnel. pounding the shit outta his kit.
and muddy, muddy, that young looking sonuvabitch, just staying with him. fingers flailing like mad. honestly, in one humble opinion, this was a great night for mr. shews.
KZ, the surfin’ bird, riding the waves on top of his set. hood peering out from the back, mindful of any jeff wipeouts. joey’s wonderfully smooth solo during “walk away renee”. chorus had every single bandmember singing. “the fever”, always an all-time fav. labamba’s solo, maddening. growling into his piece. visually, spinning and kicking his leg into the air, showing off those brown and white spats. triumphant body language saying “take that, motherf%#$er!!!!”
johnny looking fit in his black tee and black all-stars, bleeding from the heart, emotion never fails to give goosebumps. “better way home” as a kamikaze finale had the room in a frenzy. heads ready to explode. so strong, so much energy. what could be left?
animated moments were as usual, pender. markus, gyrating, ball-bearings in his hips, pleading amore to the air. is it any wonder he wears “the loveman” moniker so well??? horns doin’ that kumbaya thing. the “illegal motion” movement is hardcore R&B.
jocularity, almost constant from johnny was the nutz. for some unknown reason, out of nowhere, he starts singing, “i’m a little teacup”. jeff and bobby, of course, follow right in. chris provides the pantomime. during the dedication to an anniversary couple, he ponders, why “renee”. suggesting instead, “sacrifice”. then pushing the envelope further, southside starts singing tammy wynette’s “d-i-v-o-r-c-e” to the couple. jeff and bobby, of course, follow right in.
johnny, obviously, a fan of “behind the music”, details the ricky nelson story. does “travlin’ man” in it’s entireity. south starts a yankee chant. labamba, a flushing by the bay devotee, objects and starts sqawking about the mets. johnny gives him crap. richie says, “my kids love the mets”. southside responds by saying, “yeah, but they love YOU, too.” later on, southside comes back to this, almost like a delayed reaction, bringing up the ambiguity of labamba being a met fan, yet richie is from philadelphia. which led to the phillies. johnny starts improvising on a chant/song for philadelphia going, “let’s go phillies, give me a cheesesteak.”
very awkward, personal instance, happened during “without love”. johnny comes over to where my wife and i are standing. he leans down slightly, actually singing to us. i’m having a flashback to jukestock thinking, “YES, the south’s gonna headbutt me again!!!!!”. unfortunately, as i leaned in, in great anticipation, the bastard stands straight up. now, i am directly, DIRECTLY at eye-level, not more than 5 inches, from his crotch. being a dedicated practitioner of heterosexuality, i am trying to be cool, looking to my left, my right, left again, straight ahead, SHIT!!!!! eye contact, AGAIN, to the crotch!!! turn my head. thank god southside is leaving. our friend gail, slaps me on the back and says, “THERE’S your F%$#ing birthday present!!!!!!!!!!”
thanks for a most succulent evening, johnny and jukes.

The King with 2Bs
ASBURYJUKES.NET – BY STAN LISOWSKI – JANUARY 6, 2001
Doin’ this one-eyed at 4:40 something. Go to BB King’s friday night. Jukes will not dissappoint. About 4 hours of tunes were taken in between the 2 gigs. The BBKing’s let those who wanted to stay, stay with no cover. Highlights, if I can remember them all; Manion’s killer solo on “Unchain My Heart”. Joey Stann doing the best sax solo ever on “Paris”, after a wonderful Bowie sounding lead in by Bobby.
Didn’t see “The Fever”, but heard it from the bathroom hallway where the phone was. Sweetheart/wife couldn’t come as she was illin’, so when our wedding song came on, rushed to the phone, called her in South Jersey and stood the whole 9 or 11 minutes holding the phone out towards the stage so we could listen to it together. Sappy? Corny? Yeah, maybe. But who cares. It was neat and fun explaining to all those passing by!!!
LaBamba SOUNDED large and in charge. KZ vamping and doing his best “flock of seagulls” impression. Jeff, dude, without the hair, it don’t work. During “Sacrifice”, Johnny calls down Pender and tells Mark “to testify”. Love man starts a semi-maniacal “sermon” by just blowing his brains out. Screaming, blasting his horn. Awesome moment here.
Second show started with “Now Or Never”. Horns had quite an Italian feel. Johhny moved to the very far corner of the stage complaining horns were too loud during one number. As if on cue, Chris Anderson steps towards him. Then Pender, followed by LB. Finally, Joey and Kingfish are all lined up together, circling Southside like demonic pied pipers. Johnny turns, startled by all that brass basically, up his ass, drops to the stage cracking up laughing.
Horns strut away, seemingly very proud of the torment they have inflicted. SS, KZ, with accordian, along with BB, just the three of them singing multiple numbers, so sweet, just to take the edge off. New numbers mixed with old, great combos. “Sinful”, tight, “Cadilac Jack” raucas. “I’m So Anxious” got lots up on their feet.
Johnny sitting down at one of the tables, converses up on the tabletop singing “Cold Sweat” funky like a monkey. “Messin’ around with the blues” sounds like a gazillion times better live than on the disc. Long interchanges of harp by SS and guitar by Bobby. Johnny asks if Bobby sounds ok.
Then asks about Mister Kazee. Jeff starts a twinkling of something additional. Johnny snaps “That’s NOT an invitation. KZ acknowledges him with an odd 1 finger salute.
Mini-skirted girl jumping on stage and dancing with South, showing mucho leg and a tad bit of buttocks. Steve on bass, SINGING. Louie Louie breaking drumstick after another. Ann from Belgium musta had a dozen broken sticks on her table by nights end.
“Better Way Home” just blew the place up. Kazee running in place ala Paul Revere and the Raiders. At another point KZ starts playing the circus march theme, drawing Hood out peeking from backstage laughing.
2ND “Fever” has Chris with an outstanding solo. Drawing handshakes from Pender and Richie. Johnny musing outloud of days gone by… Telling of his youth, with his brother, coming into the city to see Cream and Zappa and Butterfield Blues Band. Pender allnight wiggling and gyrating like a belly dancer on crack.
Aw hell, so much good shit. Just go. And you’ll see. You’ll see.
Thanks fellas.
Ears are still ringing and “oooo oooo oooo it’s gonna be alright”
