I remember last night (Amsterdam)
TUES 9 NOVEMBER: PARADISO, AMSTERDAM
It’s a bright, cold day, which Marjan and I spend walking the canals in Amsterdam and gazing at the tall, tottering but so elegant buildings… Finally we all gather on the steps of the Paradiso for photos and a long, cold wait, to the amusement of stray band and crew members walking past. But it’s the penultimate show for us, and it’s Marjan and Evelien’s home gig, so it’s important we get a spot where we can see.
The Paradiso – as I may be the last to know – has been a famous rock venue since the mid-sixties, but before that was a church. A lovely building in the cultural quarter of the city, with an amazingly high stage, which still has the orginal stained glass windows glowing with a dim, eerie light behind it. and two rows of prettily carved wooden balconies all around the other three sides. Southside said he didn’t know why he had a new white shirt on – maybe because he was in church… and he sure put on a righteous show… Great mood, lots of requests played, lots of impro…

From Brussels to Amsterdamned
ASBURYJUKES.NET – ANCIENE BELGIQUE, JUNE 17, 2001 & THE MELKWEG, JUNE 18, 2001 – BY GUIDO WELSCH
It’s been 9 years, since I’ve last seen the Jukes, and it’s been 6 month since I got notice that the guys finally will come over to Europe again. Six month getting nervous. Planning the trips and looking forward to dance the night away. I didn’t know, what was waiting for me.
Klaus told me his stories of getting to Jersey, the Stone Pony and his “Heart of Stone” encounters of a Joisey kind. Oh how great to meet the guys not only on stage. Wouldn’t that be great?
Getting into Brussels, Klaus told me that Maggie (“Hi, I’m Maggie Powell”) organized a Pre-Show-Party. Maggie, I can’t thank you enough, and I can’t tell you how great it’s been to meet you in person.
What a great hello to all the Jukeheads. Some of you guys really did know my name. Unbelieveable! And my bad English didn’t stop anybody of you talking to me ;-)
What a great start for a great weekend!
And then, it happend, what I was thinking about and whished for since weeks… The whole band paid us a visit at the ‘Separee’ of the ABCafe.
You can not imagine, how fast everybody ripped all the posters off the wall (even Muddy did it!), you can not imagine, how patient every Juke signed anything, you can not imagine how nice they’ve been. Oh what a bunch of great guys.
John, Bob, Louie, Jeff, Muddy, Joey, Ed, Chris, thank you for every minute you spend with us! I enjoyed every second. And Mr. Southside, your “smalltalk” is purest fun too!!! Thanks for the pictures, the autographs and your warm and charming reception!
I will not write much about the show. They opened with an adrenalin heartbeating – “On the Beach”, and they closed with an heartstoping – “Hearts of Stone”. They played “Paris”. I have no more words…
2 hours purest R’n'B. THE BEST!
Allright. The next day: Amsterdam. Amsterdamned…
I thought, ok, seeing two times the same show, wouldn’t be bad after all these years. Oh I wouldn’t have minded if they would have played the very same set again.
But, NO WAY. They just invented the whole damned thing completely new. It’s been a total unique and different show. It wasn’t the same for a second. Sad to say that… But… It wasn’t as good as the fantastic show of the night before, – IT WAS EVEN BETTER!!! – 1000 people, a sold out Melkweg! The best Dutch audience I’ve ever seen on a show.
God damned – Amsterdamned.
Thank you guys! And please come back soon!
Don’t let us wait for another nine years.
Guido (Oberhausen, Germany)
PS.: One other thing: My son Cedric is just 8 month old. And he has to see this band on stage one day! So, no way for retirement! Please!
