Johnny set the tone for the evening at the start by announcing a song in tribute to “an honest musician.” The band slammed a home run with their fierce version of The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. I liked the way they bracketed the show with Band songs opening and closing the main set, and then Ophelia as the penultimate encore. Ironically, Levon Helm’s next show was to have been at the Wellmont before he collapsed and went into his final decline. You could almost feel his spirit hovering over the stage. God rest his soul.
Don’t expect to get too comfortable during Southside Johnny’s Montana debut Thursday at the Alberta Bair Theater. Southside Johnny, aka John Lyon, has spent four decades stirring things up with his blend of blues and roots-tinged rock. And he expects a certain level of rowdiness from his fans. “It’s music that’s meant to be responded to — maybe that’s jumping up on stage and singing with us,” Johnny said in a telephone interview last week. “A lot of the out-of-control stuff that we do just happens. I’ve got horn players, and horn players are insane.” Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes aren’t as well known as their New Jersey musical cohorts, Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band. Springsteen, Johnny and Steven Van Zandt emerged from the New Jersey Shore music scene of the 1970s in Asbury Park, N.J. Springsteen gave Johnny a few songs and Van Zandt wrote Johnny’s signature song, a horn-based melody with sentimental lyrics, “I Don’t Want To Go Home.” Rolling Stone magazine heralded Johnny’s 1978 “Hearts of Stone” album as among the top 100 albums of the 1970s.
By Kevin Gross/Gloucester County Times – Friday, March 23, 2012 – The Poor Fools is made up of members from his other band, the Asbury Jukes, and includes John Conte on bass, Tommy Byrnes on guitar, and longtime Jukes collaborator Jeff Kazee on the organ and percussion, plus Springsteen violinist and fiddle player Soozie Tyrell. The lesser-known singer and songwriter, who followed a path similar to Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi, got his start as a teenager in the late ’60s. Now he has accumulated nearly 20 studio albums as Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, along with live albums, EPs, solo work and collaborative work with Springsteen, Bon Jovi and others. “It comes and goes. When you’re inspired it seems like you write a lot of songs,” said Johnny. “Right now, these last two years have been very fertile for me.” Read the full article on NJ.com
